1801 10C AU50 PCGS. JR-1, R.4. The R in LIBERTY is heavily recut, and the reverse shows extensive die rust. A clash mark from the upper edge of the clouds extends beneath the date. This is the first example of this scarce variety that we have offered, at the AU50 grade level, since at least January 1993 (according to our own Auction Archives). That is a good indication of how few of these coins still exist, especially at any grade level above XF.
This example is well detailed and displays dappled, attractively original patina on both sides. Only obverse stars 8 through 12 exhibit slight striking weakness on the obverse, as do some of the finer design details around the upper half of the eagle's shield, and the side of the eagle's neck (including UN in UNUM). Typically worn for the grade, with just a few tiny surface nicks scattered about, this is an appealing and rare coin that should elicit strong interest from potential new owners.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
