1801 $10 MS63 NGC. Breen-6843, Taraszka-25, BD-2, R.2. One of two varieties of the year. This Wide Date variant is distinctly different from its Close Date counterpart. More than 40 years ago, Walter Breen listed the differences in his monograph on the ten dollar series. "First 1 practically touching curl well to left of the usual position; first star high, presenting only one point to the curl and that one at a moderate distance ... L away from cap; Y free of adjacent star ... there are several spine-like vertical marks on the cap just above the hair, evidently clash marks from vertical stripes on the shield."
The 1801 has a larger survival rate than other early tens, leading one to conclude that a hoard or two may have existed at one time. In addition to higher numbers in all grades, there are also more Uncirculated examples of this date known than other early tens. A significant number of Mint State 1801 tens are extant today, making this the logical choice for many high grade gold type sets. That being said, there are relatively few MS63 or finer 1801 tens that are known today. Only 77 coins have been certified by the two major services in this grade with 68 pieces finer (8/07). This is a particularly attractive coin. The mint luster is bright and the fields display a semi-reflective gleam on each side. The striking details are full, something that can be said about few early tens. Liberty's hair details are completely defined as are the feathers on the eagle's breast just above the shield. There are a few small abrasions scattered over each side, but none are worthy of individual mention. Rich yellow-gold color.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
