1801 $10 MS62 PCGS. B. 2-B, Taraskza-25, R.3. The Philadelphia Mint did not strike any 1802-dated Eagles, but this does not mean that no Ten Dollar gold pieces were delivered that year. On the contrary, the Mint produced 15,090 Capped Bust Right Eagles in 1802 using 1801-dated dies. An additional 29,954 1801 Eagles had been struck the previous year for a combined mintage of 44,344 pieces. Two die marriages were used for this delivery, with the more common B. 2-B identifiable by the relatively large amount of space between star 1 on the obverse and Liberty's lowest hair curl. The present representative boasts considerable eye appeal for the grade with a semi-prooflike finish that is more readily evident on the reverse. Green-gold and orange-gold colors compete for dominance as the surfaces rotate under the light; a blush of rose tinting is seen in the center of the obverse. There are no areas of mentionable striking incompleteness, nor are there any singularly distracting abrasions. Perfect for advanced type or date purposes. From the Ashland City Collection.
