1801 $10 MS62 NGC. Breen-6843, Taraszka-25, BD-2, R.2. Few U.S. coins are as impressive to behold as an early eagle. Larger than a half dollar but struck in gold, the present piece dates to the administration of Thomas Jefferson, and it is easy to imagine that it helped pay for the Louisiana Purchase, although no such claim is made here. The 1801 BD-2 is available by the difficult standards of Heraldic Eagle ten dollar pieces, but is under enormous demand as an early gold type coin. The Heraldic Eagle type was struck only between 1797 and 1804, and most of the mintage was eventually melted or impaired.
There are two die pairings of 1801 eagles. These are sometimes referred to as the "Wide Date" or "Narrow Date," but the difference in the date logotype is actually difficult to see, even when both varieties are placed side by side. It is easier to remember that BD-1 has a leaf touching the I in AMERICA, while the leaf tip is separated from the I for the BD-2 variety. The obverse pick-up point is the first star. BD-1 shows two star points near the curl, while the first star for BD-2 is relatively distant from the curl.
The present piece is surprisingly unabraded for the MS62 grade. Thorough evaluation beneath a glass locates a few faint marks on the lower right obverse quadrant, but none of these are worthy of individual mention, and the overall appearance is irrefutably pleasing. The strike is exacting, since only the obverse star centers and the drapery near the shoulder show any incompleteness. Rotation beneath a light reveals glowing luster, which is particularly strong throughout the borders and devices. A problem-free Mint State Heraldic Eagle ten dollar piece is on the want lists of countless numismatists, but only one collector will be able to obtain the current example.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
