1801<$10> MS60 NGC. Breen-6843, B. 2-B, Taraszka-25, R.3. The variety is confirmed by the first 1 in the date practically touching the curl, star 1 being high and presenting only one point to the curl, and a space between the clouds that is below the right serif of the E of STATES. Mint records report the mintage as 29,254 pieces in 16 different deliveries, to which must be added 15,000 coins struck in 1802 from 1801 dies.
The specimen offered here displays bright, yellow-gold surfaces with prooflike luster in the protected areas of the obverse and most of the reverse field. The design elements are well centered on the planchet and sharply defined, except that a couple of the star centers are soft. Two abrasions are reported on the obverse: one near the center of Liberty's cap, the other under star 7. Pronounced scuffiness in the obverse fields serves to limit the assigned grade.
