Tooled, polished, but just the same an historic early $10 gold piece that most collectors will nod in agreement deserves a lovingly place in somebody's collection. Coinage authority, including specified weights and fineness of the eagle conforms to that of the half eagle or $5 denomination. The large eagle reverse appears in 1797 and lasts until the abrupt end of the series in 1804. Many of these early pieces show cleaning or file scratches from the mint's practice of adjusting weight. No eagles were struck after 1804 until 1838.
