1800's Dutch Dogon Glass Trade Bead Necklace
For your consideration is this rare 18th century Dutch Dogon trade bead necklace. This piece shows a mixed strand of Dutch Dogon glass trade beads. The beads are beautiful examples of African craftsmanship and are shown on a twine string. Believed to date back as far as the 17th century, these beads were often used in Dutch villages to make garden mosaics, instead of having flowers in the formal gardens during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. This was before they found their way to the shores of West Africa to make jewelry for the Dogon people. Popular colors for Dutch Dogon beads are most often blue but can also be back black, white or brown. These wonderful old beads are mostly smooth, with some pitted and rough surfaces. The condition of this bracelet is good with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this necklace is approximately 8" diameter and 27" in circumference.
