1800's Broom w/ American Indian Tipi Provenance
The lot features an old 1800’s whicker broom with tag that reads, “1800’s American Indian Teepee Broom Original Listed in Indian Ref. Books Very Hard to Find”. The broom shows the appropriate manufacture to date to the 19th Century, with whicker bundles having natural open end and gripping area further wrapped in brown painted or dyed whicker, a whicker loop at the end holding the old collection tag, and a braided drop of Indian tanned hide with a single wound glass blue early trade bead. The piece was stated as originating from the Lakota Sioux Native American Indian tribe from the previous collector and was originally sold in an old estate Massachusetts sale years ago. Tipi (otherwise referred to as teepee, tepee, tepe, or tipi) brooms are very uncommon, with another example listed and sold in 2018 as Native American broom 20th Century in Premier Auction Galleries of Chesterland. We are unable to locate the reference book the tag refers to. Overall, the broom measures 26.25” L with an additional 14” L hide fringe and is approximately 4.25” at its widest.
