1800 S-197 R1 VF30.
1800 S-197 R1 VF30. The so-called "Q Variety" for its distinctive die crack through the first 0 in the date. Very slightly sharper but there are a few small contact marks, including a vertical nick in the field under the hair ribbon and a dull nick on the rim under the second 0 in the date. In addition, there is a short piece of brassy wire (most likely from a wire brush used to clean the dies at the mint) that is struck into the field before the eye. Struck-through voids are relatively common on early coppers where pieces of thread or wire get struck on a die and leave tiny impressions on the struck coins. However, having the piece of thread or wire (as in this case) actually remaining in the coin are extremely rare. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with lots of frosty luster showing in protected areas on the reverse. LDS, Breen state IV. The "Q" break through the first 0 in the date is strong and the die failures at LI are obvious. A beautiful example displaying an extremely rare type of mint error.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
