1800 S$1 VG10 NGC. B-20, BB-185, High R.6. Die State III. Star 8 tucked below right arm of Y; T of UNITED doubled below its base. Although several varieties have Star 8 close to the upper serif of Y, they nearly touch on this obverse die. The doubled T reverse die is used also for B-4 and B-16, but both of those varieties have star 8 far from Y. An attractive two-tone example with medium gray color in the fields and lighter grayish-gold toning on the devices. The left side of the obverse has clearly visible and prominent bulges. This example is a similar die state and similar condition to the Spies Collection, B-20a. Perhaps it is the Spies coin, although that piece was not plated in the 1974 Stack's catalog, so we may never know. Although this example is not in the Condition Census of the top six pieces, it is not far removed. The finest example, to the best of our knowledge, grades just XF40 or 45.
According to our consignor, this piece was purchased on eBay from "a man who claimed it was his grandfather's and had been in the family for many years. I sure believed him when the coin arrived in an old Whitman Kraft envelope and an old, brittle cellophane. Haven't seen that style of storage in decades." This variety was considered R.7 until very recently, thanks to the efforts of Bill Luebke, who purchased two examples, both unattributed, in 2004. The art of cherrypicking is best accomplished by memorization of the individual die characteristics for all rare varieties. In addition to the various examples known, two pieces of this rare die marriage have been altered to 1804, according to Bolender.
Ex: eBay (9/2004).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
