1800 S$1 VF35 ANACS. B-4a, BB-186, R.4. Die State III. Digit 8 leans right; T in UNITED doubled below base. Die flaws at ES are another key to identification of the reverse die, although there is no indication of any other reverse die defects. This is one of the latest die states seen, with advanced obverse cracks Bowers described as Die State III, and later than any Jules Reiver described. The obverse shows extensive die swelling, at the bust and also at the hair ribbon. These two areas of obverse swelling cause weakness at the opposing points on the reverse and make this an extremely difficult coin to grade. Die cracks include one through the final border and drapery, another through the digit 1 and Liberty's shoulder, eventually curving through the neck into the right field, another through the left serif of B and down through Liberty's hair, and another through star 1 to the hair curl just below the ribbon. Deeply toned in blends of pewter and steel-gray color with hints of subdued gold toning near the borders. A few wispy hairlines and tiny abrasions can be seen on each side.
Ex: eBay (4/2003).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
