1800<S$1> Normal Dies. B-13, BB-193, R.3--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. Stars 1, 7, 8, and 13 consecutively closer to hair, L, Y, drapery; Cloud space below upright of E, stars 4, 5, 6 do not touch clouds. Reiver die state b. Bowers-Borckardt die state II. This coin is very nice for the grade, and whatever cleaning evidence is present is minor and not too distracting. Toned a dove gray with darker hues highlighting the devices, particularly so on the reverse. Fully struck by the dies, with no signs of weakness found. The reverse die shows strong single clash marks from the obverse, with Liberty's drapery lines through the F of OF and the clouds below (Bolender's "spray" of die breaks), with a star from the obverse seen clashed around the first A of AMERICA, and Liberty's curls outlined in the field of the reverse stars left of the eagle's head, and even the date 1800 present at the top of the reverse. On the obverse faint clashing is seen above the date from the reverse clouds. Clash marks were not understood when Bolender wrote his reference work in 1950, and often caused confusion and misattributions as numismatists tried to figure out how the dies interacted with each other. A good choice to represent this variety for the collector.
Ex: Stack's W. Earl Spies Collection (December, 1974) lot 201. Envelope Included.
