1800<S$1> Wide Date, Low 8 MS64 PCGS. B-10, BB-190, R.3. Die State IV. This MS64 PCGS specimen of the finest examples known for this die variety. It is also an example of the 1800 "Wide Date" type and is thus desired by both type and die variety collectors. This lustrous specimen has attractive medium gray and light gold toning on both sides. A few tiny (and insignificant) surface distractions are noted under magnification. After striking this die marriage, the obverse die was mated with the famous "AMERICAI" reverse die, creating the rare 1800 B-11, BB-191 die marriage. Afterward, the reverse die appears to have shattered completely as it was not used to strike any subsequent die marriages.
Although not mentioned in the die state analysis in the Bowers book, at some point the obverse die clashed with the reverse die. This specimen shows clash marks between Liberty and the rim, through star 13, and into the field in front of Liberty. The reverse die is virtually shattered, and displays two die breaks through the C of AMERICA, and another through ER, to the ribbon above, another within the right wing of the eagle, and clash marks are seen from Liberty's drapery near OF and the clouds below.
Ex: Heritage's Michael Hering Collection and FUN Sale (January, 2002), lot 7232.
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
