1800 S$1 12 Arrows Fine 12 ANACS. B-17, BB-196, R.1. Die State I. Die flaw at left foot of 1; 12 Arrows. There is no doubt that the B-17 die marriage is the most common variety of 1800, although examples of the earliest die state are extremely rare. Bolender called this the "collar" variety, for a clash mark at Liberty's neck that resembles a shirt or coat collar. As recently as the early 1990s, it was believed that every example of this variety had this clash mark until this cataloger discovered a Die State I example in September 1993 and reported in the January 1994 issue of the John Reich Journal. We sold another example as part of the Jules Reiver Collection, and this example is a third. Dave Bowers had the foresight to list the perfect obverse die coins as Die State I in his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, even though no examples were known to him. Today, we are only aware of these three examples, although there certainly are more that have not been discovered or reported. This cataloger is pleased to have handled all three of the Die State I pieces that are currently reported. Deep gray color on both sides with splashes of gunmetal-blue toning. A few small rim nicks are evident, most noticeably over E of UNITED. Both sides have the usual tiny circulation marks and a few faint scratches.
Ex: J.J.
