1800 S$1 Dotted Date MS66 NGC.
1800 S$1 Dotted Date MS66 NGC.<p>B-14, BB-194. R-3. Die State IV. This Gem Mint State Dollar is very likely the finest known example of the popular 1800 "Dotted Date." The coin is well struck for the variety and the obverse and reverse display full, satiny mint luster. The obverse is toned in various shades of medium gray, gold, and deep blue, while the reverse shows lighter shades of gray and gold, with a touch of electric-blue at the tip of the eagle's right wing. The 1800 "Dotted Date" variety gets its name from the die marks that appear inside the first 0 in the date, above the same 0, and the lighter dot-like marks in the date area. It is extremely popular with both type and die variety collectors and is listed in the Guide Book of United States Coins as a separate variety for 1800--but don't expect the Guide Book to be of much help in pricing this rarity as it only lists a price up to the MS60 grade. Condition Census: At the time Bowers Silver Dollar book was published in 1993, a specimen in AU55 or AU58 would have been considered to be high in the Condition Census. The Boyd Specimen, lot 100 in the World's Greatest Collection (WGC) sale, 1945, was called MS63 in Bowers "Notable Specimens" and was the highest graded example in his survey. The WGC was the collection of F.C.C. Boyd. That piece was further described as "An Unc. Gem, with brilliance of original mint luster. Nick on chin." We have not been able to trace the Boyd Specimen since it was offered for sale in the 1949 ANA Sale, and it is not known for certain how the coin would grade today. There are a couple of examples that have changed hands since 1993 that should be mentioned in any discussion of the Condition Census for this die marriage. In April 1997, the Eliasberg Specimen of the 1800 "Dotted Date" Dollar was called MS63. A beautiful specimen that would grade at least AU58 turned up on the bourse floor at the 2000 ANA Convention, and is now in the collection of a California die variety specialist. As always, there may be others that contend for the honor, but for now the specimen offered here has to be considered one of the finest examples known. From the Michael Hering Collection.
