1800 S$1 Dotted Date MS63 NGC. B-14, BB-194, R.3. Die State IV, or possibly later. This is one of the latest die states seen for the 1800 Dotted Date dollar, including all of the die cracks described by Bowers in his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia for Die State IV, and additional small lumps of die rust scattered about the obverse. Only one Mint State example of this variety was recorded by Bowers in his "Notable Specimens" list, tracing its pedigree back to the F.C.C. Boyd Collection sold by Numismatic Gallery. That coin was described with a nick on Liberty's chin, obviously similar to the PCGS MS64 example sold as part of the Cardinal Collection by Bowers' firm, American Numismatic Rarities. They stated that the coin was "probably" from the Boyd Collection, which seems quite likely. Here then, is a second Mint State coin, one apparently not known to the current generation of early dollar collectors.
Both sides of this specimen are well-centered with full borders, and sharp details throughout the remainder of the obverse and reverse, except for the stars along the left obverse border. Both sides have frosty silver luster beneath deep lilac and golden-brown toning that is fully consistent with toning that is seen on coins from old-time collections. A small tick within the drapery above the first 0 in the date is the only individual mark that we can find to help establish a pedigree.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
