A clashmark of the date on the upper reverse helps identify this scarce Bolender variety. Bolender originally classified this clashed state as B-18, but numismatists eventually realized it was from the same dies as the unclashed B-13. This splendid dove-gray example has only slight wear evident on the eagle's breast and Liberty's shoulder. The fields are pleasantly unabraded, as is the portrait aside from a light horizontal mark beneath the ear. Luster glimmers across design elements when the piece is rotated beneath a light. 1800 dollars are always available for a price in VF and XF grades, but attractive near-Mint examples are both scarce and desirable. Census: 48 in 58, 21 finer (7/06).
