1800 S$1 AU53 PCGS.<p>B-13, BB-193. R-4. Die State II. Here is an attractive, Almost Uncirculated example of the "Comet" variety, so named as there is die clashing from the stars on the right through the last two clouds and OF. The surfaces are toned a nice, medium gray, with traces of luster consistent with the grade, and no discernable abrasions. When M. H. Bolender published his Early Silver Dollars of the United States 1794 to 1803, he classified this die marriage (in this die state) as B-18. Bolender called the reverse clash marks described above as "a die break like a spray." He correctly identified the obverse as the same die on his numbers B-13 and B-18, but for some reason believed the reverse dies were different. When Bolender sold his personal reference collection of early dollars in February 1952 in his 183rd Auction Sale, he was missing the 1800 B-13, but he had multiple specimens of the B-18. Part of the reason he lacked an example of B-13 is that most B-13 die marriages seen have the clash marks in the upper right portion of the reverse. Bolender's number B-13 was assigned to the very rare early state of the dies (before the dies clashed). From the Michael Hering Collection.
