1800 S$1 AU53 ICG. B-16, BB-187, R.2. This is a relatively common early Dollar die variety, but a fun one as it is available in many different obverse die states. The obverse die was only used to strike 1800 B-16, BB-187, and can be identified by a die dot in the field to the left of the highest curl (and under BE of LIBERTY). There is also a noticeable die flaw to the top right of the R in LIBERTY. The reverse is also easy to attribute as it has die flaws between the rim and the ES of STATES, which clearly show on this specimen. This is an exceptionally attractive example with a different "look" on each side. The left side of the obverse is mossy-green and the right side is mostly brilliant, while in-between is a mottled blend of the two. The reverse, on the other hand, has warm golden-olive patina overall with a lilac colored center. An extraordinary amount of mint luster survives on this piece, especially on the reverse. A couple of small abrasions can be seen on the upper neck of Liberty with an angling mark just in front of Liberty's lovelock. From the Albany Collection.
