1800 S$1 AMERICAI VF35 ANACS. B-11, BB-191, R.5. Die S
1800 S$1 AMERICAI VF35 ANACS. B-11, BB-191, R.5. Die State II. Wide date, 8 low; AMERICAI. It appears that all examples of this variety were coined from Die State II with evidence of lapping on the obverse, especially at the hair curls above Liberty's head. Two different obverse dies were used with the AMERICAI reverse (the other is B-19), and this B-11 variety is far scarcer than the other. It is not known exactly what caused the die scratch on the reverse, although it resembles the right side of an A. It is clearly not from a letter I punch, but the variety has been called the AMERICAI variety for several decades; Bolender used the term in 1950. Dave Bowers wrote: "Nowhere else in the silver dollar series has a stray die mark done so much for a coin's value and desirability in the eyes of collectors." Half cent collectors have a similar situation with the famous 1804 Spiked Chin obverse. Lovely grayish-brown surfaces with pale blue and iridescent accents. A pleasing dollar with only minor surface marks consistent with the grade. The die scratch after AMERICA is quite weak and there is some surface roughness (possibly a lamination defect) in the area which further obscures it.
Ex: Heritage (11/2001), lot 1097.
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
