1800<S$1> 12 Arrows. B-17, BB-196, R.3--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. Diagonal die line at left base of 1; Cloud space left of center below E, leaf below left upright of I. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state I. This is the plate coin for the Reiver reference, both obverse and reverse for the B-17A variety. This coin has been cleaned and is now a steel gray color and we note some dark spots of toning before Liberty's face and a few lighter ones on her portrait. On the reverse there are some rim marks, otherwise the surfaces are pretty average for a coin of this grade. This is a very early die state which was coined before the dies clashed. There is no pocket at Liberty's throat, this is later caused by clashing with the right wing of the eagle, and there are no drapery lines clashed through OF on the reverse. Even the curious die line extending to the left of the 1 is thin and less prominent than seen on later die states. When this coin was purchased from a Stack's auction, Bust dollar specialists soon read about this unreported early die state from an article written by Jules Reiver published in the John Reich Collectors Society Journal. Perhaps a few other examples exist, but this is the only coin reported to date which does not show the clash marks and quite important to specialists as such. The F of OF is very weakly struck. Identifiable by a minor rim nick above M of AMERICA and another near the right wing tip of the eagle.
Ex: Stack's (November, 1996). Envelope Included.
