1800 $5 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6438, BD-5, High R.3. BD Die State d/b (early). The 1800 issue appears to be among the more available of the early Draped Bust half eagles, and accordingly makes an excellent choice for a type or year set (for the more daring among us). The issue is plentiful in grades up through AU, and even the lower Mint State ranks see numerous occupants. Looking at the data, NGC and PCGS combined have certified a total of 76 pieces in AU50 or AU53. In AU55 and AU58, the total increases to 173 coins, and there are now 168 pieces at both services from MS60 through MS63. In the near-Gem MS64 grade, however, the total thins out substantially, to only 13 examples at both services. In MS65 and higher grades, there are two coins, one each at NGC and PCGS (both MS66 pieces) (11/06). Those figures, of course, will be artificially inflated by the inevitable resubmissions, crossovers, and the sometimes-significant attainment of "one more point."
This variety marks the fourth and final use of this obverse, shared with the BD-2 through BD-5. The 1 in the date lacks a "flag" or top serif. The 1 in the date is separated from the curl. The distance between 1 and 800 is greater than between the other digits. The stars are arranged eight and five, with star 9 very nearly touching the Y of LIBERTY. On the reverse is the key diagnostic that signals this pairing: Both feet of the last A in AMERICA touch the claw of the eagle. The right side of the last S in STATES is about over a space between two clouds. A star point touches the back of the eagle's neck.
In this die state on the obverse, a light die crack crosses IBER, and the early beginning of a crack runs from the rim through L. Several reverse die cracks are noted, including one from the edge through R into the field, another from the lower left (facing) leaves through the left foot, the shield, and the right foot, and another from the edge through the I in UNITED into the field. However, no trace of a crack from ED to the wing is visible.
This example, one of the finest dozen or so certified excluding duplicates (possibly one of the finest eight or so coins certified), offers lovely, lustrous orange-gold coloration. A few light contact marks on Liberty's cheek and in the right field remove this coin from Gem consideration, but its appeal is considerable.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
