1800 $5 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6438, BD-5, High R.3. A total of five die pairings were used to coin 1800 half eagles, four of which share a common obverse die as on the BD-5. Here, the 1 in the date is lacking the upper left serif, often referred to as a Blunt 1. The reverse die is unique to this variety, however, and is recognized by a star touching the back of the eagle's neck. The Philadelphia Mint stepped up production of Capped Bust Right Heraldic Eagle half eagles in 1800 to a new high of 37,628 pieces. After a one-year hiatus, comparatively high mintage figures were also recorded from 1802 through 1807 when the new Capped Bust Left design was phased in. This issue and the 1802/1 are generally considered to be the two most obtainable dates from this challenging series.
This lovely, wholly original example is boldly struck in all areas, with especially sharp highpoint definition noted on the reverse. Struck from an intermediate die state, a wispy die crack angles down between the IB in LIBERTY and continues to touch the bases of ER. The reverse exhibits a few more prominent die cracks, the most obvious of which advances from the lower left olive leaves through the right leg (facing), the base of the shield, and onto a claw on the eagle's left leg. Location of this particular die crack is often used for attribution of the BD-5 since it is visible on nearly all examples. An important opportunity for the advanced gold specialist. Population: 6 in 64, 1 finer (12/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
