1800 $5 MS64 NGC. Breen-6438, B. 1-B, Miller-42, R.4. Five die marriages were used to coin 1800 Half Eagles, four of which share a common obverse die. The reverse die is unique to this variety, however, and is distinguished by a repunched rightmost star. Both sides reveal modest prooflike tendencies in the fields with rich green-gold color and lighter orange-gold overtones. This is a very well defined example for the series with appreciable detail over the peripheries and central devices. The grade-defining abrasions are neither sizeable nor individually distracting. Several diagonal adjustment marks are seen across the shield on the reverse. The 1800 is one of the more readily obtainable early Half Eagles, but the original mintage of 37,628 pieces precludes a large extant population. A lovely coin that would make a pleasing addition to even the most advanced collection. Population: 8 in 64, none finer at either service (2/05).
