1800 $5 MS63 NGC. Breen-6438, B. 1-B, Miller-42, R.4. Four of the five 1800 varieties share a common obverse die, but the fifth variety has a die that is unique, distinguishable by repunching on the rightmost star. This impressive early half eagle shows bright, lemon-yellow surfaces with a scattering of darker toning flecks on each side. The strike is pleasantly bold, although light weakness is seen near Liberty's ear, and on the eagle's neck and left (facing) claw. Despite the early date, somehow this type always seems quite modern in design to this cataloger, with an off-center LIBERTY cascading down the right side of the coin. Census: 17 in 63, 8 finer (1/06).
