The usual minor handling marks are evident on each side.<BR><B><BR>Variety. </B></I>Overdate. Final 0 high, out of position. Stemless leaf pair at E of ONE. The obverse appears on S-196. The reverse appears on S-196.<BR><B><BR>Die State III. </B></I>The latest die state per Breen, with a fine die crack through the E of LIBERTY into the hair, and clash marks near the fraction and right ribbon end.<BR><B><BR>Census. </B></I>Just two AU coins are known, including one in the ANS Collection, followed by this example and several other similar pieces. Since the ANS coin is not collectible, this example is tied for the second finest available to collectors.<BR><B><BR>Commentary. </B></I>The 1800 S-196 overdate is undoubtedly the most plentiful and easily acquired 1800 overdate variety. A single overdate, or two overdates represent each hair style, is easily accomplished. However, a complete collection of all 11 varieties is nearly impossible, including four of the six known NC varieties for the year. <BR><B><BR>Provenance. </B></I><I>A.H. Baldwin; New Netherlands (6/1962), lot 500, $110; Richard Picker; R.E. Naftzger, Jr.; Bowers and Merena (3/2002), lot 1129, $5,750.</B></I><BR><B><BR>Personality. </B></I>A dealer who specialized in important Colonials, <B>Richard Picker </B></I>was born on June 22, 1915, in New York City, and died on February 1, 1983, also in New York. He was the author of several contributions to <I>The Colonial Newsletter</B></I>.
