Both sides have minor roughness with some verdigris on the reverse. The usual light handling marks and faint scratches are evident.<BR><BR><B>Variety. </B></I>Overdate. Style I Hair. Bulges at ON and fraction. The obverse appears on S-190, S-191, NC-5, and NC-6. The reverse appears on S-191.<BR><BR><B>Die State IV. </B></I>An intermediate state of the reverse cracks and bulges.<BR><BR><B>Census. </B></I>This example is clearly a candidate for the traditional Condition Census, but it is not tied for the finest as recorded by Bland. It is probably a legitimate contender for fourth or fifth finest<BR><BR><B>Commentary. </B></I>The first hair style of this obverse die indicates that it was a left over die intended for use early in 1798, but never placed in service. It is believed that some 1798 dies remained in use as late as 1800, without repunching the date. Other dies, including this obverse, were unused in 1798 or 1799, and could be successfully overdated without risking damage or destruction. <BR><BR><B>Provenance. </B></I><I>Rodney T.
