1800 $10 MS63 NGC. Breen-6842, B. 1-A, Taraszka-23, R.4. The upper serif of the 1 in the date just touches Liberty's hair, and the point of an olive leaf is attached to the right base of the I in AMERICA. The seventh star is repunched. A late state of the obverse die, with a bold die crack (as made) through the tops of the letters in LIBERTY. This crack intersects with three lighter radial die cracks, the first of which reaches the peak of Liberty's cap. Only one die marriage of 1800 Eagles is known. According to Walter Breen in his 1988 Encyclopedia, 5,999 coins were struck between November 18 and 25, 1800. The Capped Bust, Heraldic Eagle type was struck for just seven years, and as a date within that brief series, only the 1798 and 1804 is more rare than the 1800. The present piece is among the finest survivors. NGC has graded a mere five examples as MS63, with only three coins in higher grades. Well struck, the eagle's neck and breast feathers are bold, and only a trace of the adjustment marks are noted near the base of Liberty's cap. A short pinscratch is encountered in the field above the arrowheads, but the surfaces are otherwise clean. This impressive early Eagle would be a highlight of any specialized early gold collection. Population: 5 in 63, 3 finer (11/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
