<B>1800 $10 MS60 NGC.</B></I> Breen-6842, BD-1, Taraszka-23, High R.3. This is the only known variety of the year. In <I>Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties,</B></I> authors John Dannreuther and Harry Bass state that: "...some of the mintage for 1801 undoubtedly was dated 1800. This corresponds with the availability of this 1800 variety...as it is more available than the calendar-year mintage of 5,999 would indicate. In fact, this is one of the more available varieties of early eagles, with more than 200 examples extant with some estimates as high as 300 known.<BR> This particular specimen exhibits bright yellow-gold surfaces that show the most potent luster in the areas around, and in the recesses of, the design features. Excellent definition is noted on Liberty's portrait, the stars and dentils on both sides, and on most of the eagle's plumage. Several minute contact marks are evenly scattered over each side, but none are worthy of individual mention.
