1800 $10 AU53 NGC. Breen-6842, Taraszka-23, BD-1, High R.3. Many collectors consider Robert Scot's Capped Bust Right ten dollar gold piece be one of the most awe-inspiring designs of all U.S. coinage. The design was used on quarter eagles, half eagles, and eagles, but the large size of the ten makes it the denomination of choice for type collectors who cannot afford an example of each. The origin of the obverse motif is unknown. Breen considered Liberty's cap not to be a Phrygian cap, or liberty cap, but rather, per Mint Director Samuel Moore, a "high-fashion headdress of the 1790s." The reverse is Scot's rendition of the Great Seal of the United States.
Only one set of dies was used to strike the 1800 eagle. Although available in circulated grades, usually with impairments, this coin is rare in near-Mint State and finer condition. This piece displays crisply defined yellow-gold surfaces with most of the original luster intact. A few light abrasions appear under a glass, none singularly distracting. There are no visible adjustment marks. Census: 16 in 58, 39 finer (5/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
