1800 $1 Draped Bust Dollar--Graffiti--NCS. VF Details. B-13, BB-193. While NCS described this piece as having graffiti, it is actually a fancy engraved dollar, and highly desirable as such. The obverse of this dollar is engraved: MAYOR ROBERT A. VAN WYCK GREATER NEW YORK 1898. The five boroughs of New York joined in 1898 to form the City of New York, and Robert A. Van Wyck was elected as the first mayor of the newly formed city (although it has been suggested that he was appointed via the influence of Tammany Hall).
Van Wyck was the Ice Scandal mayor who desired to double the price per pound of ice in a day before refrigeration and air conditioning. An investigation by his political opponents revealed that he owned $680,000 worth of stock in the American Ice Company, the sole supplier of ice to New York, despite a salary of only $15,000 per year. The investigation further revealed that Mayor Van Wyck had apparently received the stock as a gift. After his term expired in 1901, he never again held political office, retiring to Paris for the remainder of his life.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
