1800 $1 AMERICAI AU58 PCGS. B-19, BB-192, R.2. The famous AMERICAI variety with a slanted die defect following the legend, known with two different obverse dies. There is yet to be a suitable explanation of the die defect, although it appears to be some type of stray mark, rather than a recutting as some have suggested. It is certainly not a stray letter "I" as its name suggests.
Dave Bowers writes: "It takes some imagination to call it an I, but the nomenclature has been with us for a long time, and 'AMERICAI' it is. Nowhere else in the silver dollar series has a stray die mark done so much for a coin's value and desirability in the eyes of collectors."
This example is an amazing piece with nearly full luster, attractive speckled gold color, and splashes of darker russet and steel toning.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
