1800<1/2 C> MS61 Brown PCGS. C-1, B-1, R.1. Die State 4. The Draped Bust design was introduced to the copper coinage in 1796 on large cents, while the Liberty Cap design remained the standard for half cents until the coinage of 1800. It is not certain why this basic design did not appear on the half cents until 1800, as it first appeared on silver coins as early as 1795. The actual design is attributed to the famous portrait painter, Gilbert Stuart, and it was translated to coinage by Robert Scot. Glossy steel-brown with frosty luster and faint traces of original mint color. This example is typical of late die states with the obverse border weak from 3 o'clock to 8 o'clock. The reverse border and OF are similarly weak. EAC 50.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
