Wonderful group of 15 vintage prints of this beautiful dancer who was a major cultural figure in pre-WWI US. With her husband Vernon, who died at an early age in a tragic WWI aviation training mission, they embodied important values for the early 20th Century. As a husband-wife dancing couple they legitimized dancing for the higher realms of society, paving the way for the Astaire-Rogers images of the next generation. Their marriage was an emblem of a "modern" marriage of equal partners. They merged their white-society dancing with black musicians, and originated and popularized many dances such as the Fox Trot. It was particularly Irene who became an exemplar of modern feminine beauty in this pre-flapper era, with her bobbed hair and youthful styles. Fabulous group of platinum, and matte and gelatine silver prints by Campbell Studio, NY, Hill Studio, NY, Edward Thayer Monroe, NY, Victor George, Chicago.
