This is a post-1902 Officer's lance cap for the 17th Lancers. The skull and peak are composed of patent leather with gold bullion lace around the edges. The mortar board is white melton cloth with ridged sides. There is gold bullion cord crossing the top and descending the angles. There is a gold bullion plume boss with "GR" cypher. The rayed plate has the Royal Arms of Great Britain topped with the Kings crown with the 17th Lancers skull badge over a banner reading "OR GLORY". There are 7 battle honors with the last being "SOUTH AFRICA 1900-02". The lion's head ear bosses suspend a gild chin chain backed in velvet. The front peak is lined in green skived leather. The sweat band is natural leather and there is a purple silk lining with a partial "SANDILANDS & SON" maker's mark. With an additional 17th Lancers other ranks cap plate with honors to 1879.

Condition: Very good, the patent leather has moderate crazing. The melton top has some staining at the edges. The plate has a bright appearance with the silver components having a dark aged patina. The chin chain has a number of bent links. The sweat band and purple lining have stains and a few loose stitches. The additional lance cap plate has an attractive patina.
