Terrific civil war autograph letter signed, written by Confederate soldier Pinkney M. Lewis from the 17th Mississippi Infantry. Signed ''P.M. Lewis'' and additionally initialed ''P.L.''. Dated 13 May 1864 from Richmond, Virginia, letter reads in part, ''…Doubtless you have heard everything about the battles, and this time, it is useless for me to try to give all the particulars. Our brigade was engaged on three different fights. One in the Wilderness and two at Spotsylvania C.H. [courthouse]…By Grant's flank moves, we had to fall back near to Richmond…Fighting is now going on in front along the lines. I think if they will change our breastworks as they did at Spotslyvania CH, they will not have an army long. They charged with gallantry, but were repulsed with considerable slaughter. Our boys firmly moved them…Our army was never in better spirits and in fighting condition, all confident in success. I hope this year we end this civil war…Our rations now are 1 1/4 lb. of meal on 1 1/8 plain on crackers, 1/2 lb.bacon, some rice, some shugar and coffee, and tobacco…'' Letter also mentions Lewis' injured brother in the same regiment, ''Benny [Benjamin Lewis] says he has nothing to write. I tried to get him to write, but he declines. He is as hearty as a buck.'' Letter on two pages, front and verso, measures 3.75'' x 7'', with toning, staining and several creases throughout. Script, written in pencil, is legible but faint. Good condition overall.
