17th Century European Military Side Sword
Also known as a cut-and-thrust blade and the spada da lato, the side sword was introduced around the 15th Century, and would be a forerunner and contemporary of the rapier, with it's ability to engage unarmored targets with cutting blows and switch to pointwork for dealing with armor making it a very useful battlefield weapon. Blade is double edged and measures 36 3/4", with a faint stamp on the right side. The guard is fitted with a 4" wide, 4 1/2" long border engraved protective disc, a short upturned rear quillion, two branch knuckleguard and a counterguard running along the back of the hand. Wire wrapped grip, with grooves front and rear, woven wire accents, thumbrest and an oval pommel.
