17th.-18th. century Chinese silver container in shape of a mutton. The head of the mutton forms the lid. The container is decorated in bas relief with intricate floral design. Size: 7.5 x 5 cm., height: 6.4 cm.
Very rare! We attributed the period of this silver container as an early Qing period. There are no other similar silver articles that we could locate for reference, except a few silver objects exhibited at the Shanghai Museum, we visited recently. The pieces exhibited were discovered in an archeological digging done in the last 15 years on a site where a Buddhist temple colapsed. The silver objects found were attributed as dating to Tang period, thus at least years earlier!. There is a strong possibility that this silver piece dates to Tang period, but we have no proof to demonstrate it such. Nevertheless, this is a museum piece and extremely rare. Estimated value: $5000.
