1799 S$1 XF45 NGC. B-5, BB-157, R.2. "Die State V." This piece is later than die state IV, the latest state recorded by Bowers and Borckardt. In fact, the reverse die is shattered, with several unrecorded die cracks. The following are noted:

1. Die State I is recorded as having a perfect reverse die and may not exist.
2. A hairline crack from the border below the stem extends left through the tips of the tail feathers, the centers of UNI, the tops of TED, the left wing tip, the centers of STA, the tops of TES, to the border between S and O. Die State II.
3. A branch crack from the first at A through the bottoms of AT, below E, to the clouds below S OF with an oval chip below S, to the right wing and AMER. Die State III.
4. The previous crack continues through IC to the border over A. Cracked from the border through the upright of the first T in STATES to cloud 2, curving left to the star below cloud 1. Die State IV.
5. This and the following are unrecorded cracks, to the best of our knowledge. A crack begins in the interior tail feathers, through the center of the bundle of arrows, the lower left field, to the base of D and the left wing feathers to the first crack at the top left feather.
6. A short crack from a dentil to the top left corner of the first T in STATES joins the first crack between S and T.
7. Cracked from the border to the eagle's claw at the branch stem.
8. Cracked from the number 7 crack through the branch, emerging between the terminal leaves, through the right field to the ribbon end, the right wing, and faintly to the bottom of cloud 8.

Despite the description of obverse die cracks in Bolender, there is no evidence of any obverse cracks on this example. In addition to the unrecorded terminal die state, this is an attractive coin with natural gray-brown color and traces of luster. The only blemish that requires a note is a faint old scratch through the T of LIBERTY.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
