<B>1799 S$1 XF40 NGC.</B></I> B-22, BB-168, R.5. Die State III. Reiver Die State b. Curl centered beneath right edge of E; upper left serif of U missing. The B-22 die combination is instantly recognized by the bisecting die crack that crosses the center of the reverse from the E of UNITED to the M of AMERICA. Although perfect-die examples should exist, we are unaware of any that have been discovered. This is one of the four R.5 varieties of the year, although it is probably the most "common" of these four die combinations.<BR> The obverse is always slightly weaker than the reverse. Also note that the reverse die was actually on two different planes, with the design elements above the die crack more sharply defined than those below the crack. Mostly dark gray with violet and iridescent highlights on each side. A wholesome early dollar with only the usual tiny nicks and scratches on the surface. This example is approaching the Condition Census for the variety.
