1799 S$1 VF30 PCGS. B-5, BB-157, R.2. Die State IV or later. Reiver Die State b. Stars 7 and 8 closer than stars 1 and 13; U defective, star 6 touches cloud 8 at two points. Two different reverse dies have the defective U that is missing its left outside serif. The second of these is known in two different die states, either with or without berries. Quite an attractive coin for the grade, and housed in an older green-label PCGS holder. Pewter-gray fields with deeper blue-gray color at the borders and lighter tan on the devices. A few tiny surface marks are noted on each side, as usual for the grade. Acquired from an eBay seller as part of a type set of silver dollars, including a 1795 B-15, an 1836 Gobrecht, 1847 and 1871 Seated dollars, a 1921-D Morgan, and a 1921 Peace dollar.
This particular example presents some problems with the recorded die states of this variety and the emission sequence of a group of interconnected die marriages. For his B-5a die state, Bolender stated: "Obverse short die cracks from lower left corner of E down to hair, and below first star" and Jules Reiver further commented: "Crack through the point of the left dentil sic, should be serif of E down through the hair meets a crack from the dentils below star 1." No similar piece was included in the Reiver sale, and Bowers mentioned that he had not seen an example, but here it is! The problem is that this obverse continued in use for additional varieties, yet with no evidence of these so-called die cracks. We are unable to find evidence of any continuation "down through the hair" as Reiver describes. It is our belief that both of these features are actually clash marks from the tail feathers and the wing tip, and that they were later lapped from the die. The other possibility is that they are actually die cracks that were lapped away.
Ex: eBay (3/2001).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
