1799 S$1 VF30 NGC. B-9, BB-166, R.1. Die State V. Reiver Die State d. Die crack below digit 1; apostrophe die flaw after final S. This variety is usually identified by the obverse and reverse die defects, rather than other die characteristics. Although the example offered here is a late die state that shows these characteristics quite clearly, they are evident to some degree on all known examples of this die combination. We are not aware of any early die states struck before the obverse and reverse die flaws developed. This is one of the most common die varieties for 1799; however, it was struck from a scarce state of the dies. According to Bowers, only about 10% to 20% of B-9, BB-166 silver dollars are in this late die state. There is an obverse die crack from the rim toward the 1 in the date. It is also popular as the "Apostrophe" variety, so named for the die flaw to the top and right of the final S in STATES. This piece is toned on both sides in shades of medium blue, gray, and gold. There is an old scratch that extends from Liberty's shoulder to the neck, but is somewhat hidden by the toning.
Ex: Heritage (2/2002), lot 6512.
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
