1799 S$1 VF25 PCGS. B-22, BB-168, R.5. This is a rare die variety and is in demand by specialists both for its rarity and for the horizontal die break that bisects the reverse. This was a favorite variety of the late John Haugh of Portland, Oregon, a dealer-specialist in early Silver Dollars 1794-1803. For years it was considered extremely rare and was missing from many specialists' collections. In the B&M 1991 ANA Sale, a mini-hoard of more than 20 pieces was offered, mostly in VG-XF grades, including one counterstamped example. But don't let this fool you - this is still a Rarity-5 early Dollar and a very desirable variety. Deep gray-rose patina covers each side with somewhat lighter accents over the highpoints of the devices. An attractive piece with the only defects being a couple of ancient scratches in the right obverse field and several more above the eagle's head on the reverse. From the Albany Collection.
