1799 S$1 VF25 NGC. B-18, BB-154, R.5. Die State II. Reiver Die State c. Curl centered under right edge of E; usually cracked between E and D. Although a few examples are known with a perfect reverse die, this variety is normally recognized by the prominent die crack from the border to the ribbon between the E and D of UNITED. Only two or three perfect-die pieces are known, including the Bowers plate coin. Capt. J.W. Haseltine gave such perfect-die coins a different number, H-20. Bolender wrote: "Haseltine's No. 20 was only a perfect die impression of No. 18, and is not a distinct die variety. Thus, No. 20 does not exist, and is now omitted to make my numbers coincide with Haseltine's." Bowers suggested that Bolender eliminated the number as non-existent, but Bolender's comments clearly indicate that he was aware of the perfect die state.
Only four 1799 varieties (out of 22 total) are currently considered R.5, and this variety appears to be the second rarest of the four. In Bolender's original reference, published in 1950, the B-18 was one of just three varieties to be called R.6. Deep gray color with pleasing golden toning near the borders, especially on the reverse. Scattered circulation marks are evident on each side, yet the surfaces are clearly finer than usually seen at this grade level.
Ex: Jim Rutherford.
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
