<B>1799 S$1 VF20 PCGS.</B></I> B-21, BB-169, R.3. Die State V. Reiver Die State b. Star 1 far from curl, star 8 close to Y; die flaws beneath AM. This is a relatively common variety, although apparently a rarity in the latest die state. This piece has the die cracks later than Bolender described, apparently equivalent to the 1973 Gilhousen specimen, lot 1264, although the plate of that piece is not clear enough to show all of the die cracks. This piece and the Gilhousen coin are different examples.<BR> The obverse has minor die roughness below and through star 1. A fine die crack from the border to the bust crosses the digit 7. Another crack from the border below the digit 1 crosses the first crack and continues through both 9s to the bust, where it turns upward into the field above the drapery, eventually joining star 11. A series of different cracks joins all stars on the right and continues through RTY. In addition to the identifying die flaws, the reverse is cracked from the border over F to the right wingtip and the tops of AME.<BR> Violet-gray with peripheral olive-brown, deeper on the reverse. The devices have lighter grayish color.
