<B>1799 S$1 VF20 PCGS.</B></I> B-10, BB-163, R.2. Die State I. Reiver Die State a. Stars 1 and 13 distant, star 7 closer, star 8 closest; all six stars touch clouds, stars 2 and 5 with two points. Only two examples of Die State I are currently verified. This piece appears to represent the earliest die state with perfect obverse and reverse dies, a die state that Bowers suggested "may not exist." In fact, this die state should not exist, except here it is. There is no evidence of any die cracks on either side. This obverse die was used with six different reverse dies to strike a similar number of die marriages, with B-10 appearing late in the sequence. Mostly violet-gray on both sides with considerable steel patina on the obverse.
