1799<S$1> Normal Date. B-7, BB-156, R.4--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. Stars 1, 13 distant, star 7 close, star 8 closest; Clouds 1, 7, 8 penetrated by stars 1, 5, 6. Reiver die state b. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. This coin is the Reiver plate coin for the obverse and reverse in his reference book. It has been harshly cleaned and remains bright and untoned. The surfaces show myriad hairlines and some light scratches from handling. A much later die state than the preceding coin, the obverse shows a faint die crack below the first star towards the third curl from the bottom, clash marks on the second star, on the IB of LIBERTY (Reiver noted these as die cracks, but they appear to be clash marks from the tail of the eagle), and a short diagonal line at the throat of Liberty, also a clash mark. On the reverse the die has shattered with numerous cracks noted in the Reiver, Bolender and Bowers-Borckardt reference. Weak stars over the eagle as that die had started to fall apart. An interesting coin to study by anyone who appreciates later die states.
Ex: Delaware Stamp and Coin (June, 1971). Envelope Included.
