Cleaned in the past and still bright silver, with traces of darker tones in the protected devices. A later die state with an additional thick die crack from the rim straight down the middle of the second T into the cloud below to the first star. The encircling die crack now extends from the rim below the branch, through the eagle's tail, centers of UNI, tops of TED, tips of two wing feathers, middle of STA, tops of TES to the rim, another branching crack has now appeared through the base of AT, tops of the right clouds, wing, base of AM, middle of ERIC. A short thin crack has also appeared from the rim down the left serif of the second T which connects to the main encircling crack. Another minor die crack is seen extending up from the top center of the branch to the ribbon above. Bolender mentions in his B-5a die state "Obverse short die cracks from lower left corner of E down to hair, and below first star." and these are not present on this coin, and Bowers-Borckardt mention that they had not seen this die state. Remnants of an "X" are seen in the right obverse field, and scattered nicks and handling marks are found with a loupe.
