1799<S$1> Normal Date. B-22, BB-168, R.3--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. Die flaws in field between eye and star 9; Defective U, leaf point below center of I. Reiver die state b. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. This is the Reiver plate coin for the obverse and reverse of this die variety. The surfaces were cleaned with an abrasive which resulted in thin hairlines which are present on both sides. Starting to retone with medium gold tones surrounding the reverse devices, but generally bright on the obverse. On this later die state there is a lump connecting the top of the E of UNITED to the bisecting die crack on the reverse. The reverse die crack was quite severe, allowing the die to strike the upper portion of the reverse very sharp, while the lower portion is not quite as strong. In addition, the obverse strike is always weak on Liberty's upper curls as this area was opposite the more weakly impressed portion of the reverse. Finding a high grade example of this variety has always proved challenging, as the coins appear to have widely circulated literally from the moment they were struck because of these weak areas. A decent example of this variety despite the cleaning and worthy of a top notch collection.
Ex: Chuck Lawver (March, 1986). Envelope Included.
