1799<S$1> Normal Date. B-22, BB-168, R.3--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. Die flaws in field between eye and star 9; Defective U, leaf point below center of I. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. Perhaps this was cleaned in the past, but the surfaces are very typical of most Bust dollars in this grade, and don't show significant impairment from mishandling. Toned a deep charcoal gray with slightly lighter tones on the devices. We note a faint scratch down from Liberty's mouth to her drapery, but this has nearly faded over time from general circulation. All known examples of this die variety show the bisecting reverse die crack, with small lumps in the die near the ED of UNITED. A slightly earlier die state than often seen, with these lumps not yet touching the top of E, although a thin die crack connects the upper serif to the bisecting crack. Identifiable by a small nick hidden in Liberty's hair curls just below the center of the coin, with a similar tiny nick on the right wing very close to the shield. Reiver die state a.
An interesting hoard of 1799 B-22, BB-168 Bust dollars came on the market in the Dr. Aspen Page Sale by Bowers and Merena in August of 1989 boasted a total of 26 different examples, virtually confirming that this was not a Rarity-6 as long touted.
Ex: Heritage (6/19/1984). Envelope Included.
